The beginnings of Rome are a blend of myth and archaeological evidence. While popular legend credits the city's founding to the twin brothers Romulus and Remus in 753 BC, archaeology shows a more gradual process. Early Rome was a collection of small agrarian villages on the Palatine Hill, developing slowly in a region of diverse Italian cultures, including the influential Etruscans to the north and Greek colonies to the south. Rome's strategic position on seven hills and along the Tiber River gave it key defensive and trade advantages, laying the groundwork for its future expansion. Initially a minor power in a world dominated by older civilizations, Rome's constant, low-level warfare forged a martial culture that would eventually pave the way for a more organised, disciplined army.
