Massive rock and tree structures are reshaping the Sacramento River for young fish. 🐟

A new habitat project on the Sacramento River in Redding, California, is helping give young salmon and steelhead a better start. With support from the Bureau of Reclamation, the Sacramento River Settlement Contractors are installing a series of rock wad structures to create calm, food rich areas along a deep stretch of the river.

Each structure pairs a large boulder with anchored trees. The boulders create pockets of slower moving water where young fish can feed and grow, while the wood provides shelter from predators.
