The Jekyll Island Federal Reserve story is one of the strangest chapters in American history, and almost nobody knows what the men who built our banking system were actually standing on when they did it. I traveled to Jekyll Island, Georgia to chase a rumor: that the cottage where the Federal Reserve was secretly drafted sits directly on top of an ancient blood sacrifice altar.
What the museum curator showed me went further than I expected. Four skeletons of a vanished tribe, every one of them roughly eight feet tall. A double-curved bow that matches nothing else found on the Atlantic coast. And a locked-away colonial painting of chiefs holding babies by the ankles over a stone altar that looks identical to ones I've seen in the Middle East. Then he handed me the keys to Rockefeller's cottage and told me I was standing on the altar itself, in the exact room where the Fed was conceived.
I could not corroborate every claim, and I tell you exactly where the trail went cold. But if even part of it is true, it reframes how you look at the money in your pocket. Watch it, sit with it, and decide for yourself.
