On Father's Day in 2005 Robert Farquharson was returning his three sons to his estranged wife's home when his car veered off the road into a dam in Victoria, Australia.
He survived. His sons didn't. He claimed he suffered a coughing syncope which rendered him instantly unconscious, causing his car to veer off the road, crash through a fence and end up in the water.
Is this a fanciful defense scenario or did this man actually have this unfortunate health crisis that ended up with the loss of his sons?
I read the very through book highly acclaimed Australian writer Helen Garner, "The House of Grief" as she sits through the trials and experiences her time there as a "thirteenth" juror. This was a case that heavily depended on the belief in a specific rare scientific event that caused the tragedy or that this man has psychological problems what led to him being a family annihilator. What did the jury decide? What did Helen decide?
