After speaking with Treasurer & Managing Director Rob Harryman and Interim Artistic Director Joe Lauderdale, I learned about the origins of No Square Theatre and their latest musical production, 'Bye, Bye, Birdie', running from July 18 through August 3, 2025.
Located in Laguna Beach, CA, No Square Theatre was co-founded in 1997 by Bree Burgess Rosen. It began as an extension of 'Lagunatics', Rosen’s popular annual musical satire that pokes fun at local politics and culture. The enthusiastic response to 'Lagunatics' revealed a strong demand for a permanent theatrical presence in the community; one that offered both performance and educational opportunities.
No Square Theatre is a non-profit community theater that serves as a creative outlet for amateur performers, directors, and technicians of all ages. It provides an inclusive space where local talent can develop and showcase their skills. In addition to staging productions throughout the year, the theater runs acting classes and educational workshops for children, teens, and adults. It also offers a scholarship program to support local high school students pursuing the performing arts.
Their upcoming show, 'Bye, Bye, Birdie', is a beloved musical comedy that remains a staple in American theatre. Set in the late 1950s, the story follows rock-and-roll heartthrob Conrad Birdie, who is drafted into the army. As a publicity stunt, he agrees to give a goodbye kiss to one lucky fan, enter Kim MacAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio to appear on live television, throwing her town (and her boyfriend) into an uproar.
