A playthrough of Renovation's 1993 interactive movie for the Sega CD, Road Avenger.
Played on the normal difficulty setting.
Road Avenger started out as an arcade LaserDisc game from Data East, released in 1985 in Japan under the name Road Blaster. The following year, a VHD disc version showed up on the MSX and Sharp X1. It then lay dormant for several years until Telenet picked up the rights to port some of Data East's LaserDisc-based coin-ops to the Sega CD.
This Sega CD version, renamed Road Avenger for North America and Road Prosecutor for PAL territories, was the second of four FMV games that Telenet's Wolf Team brought to the platform.
As the Road Avenger, you're hunting down the gang of outlaws responsible for the death of your wife. It's essentially a Japanese anime take on Mad Max set in modern-day America.
The animation was done by Toei, and the theme song for this version was done by the band J-Walk, whose guitarist had previously worked on the soundtracks for youtu.be/uBhzuJPjZAM and the first Fist of the North Star game on the Famicom. It was also directed by Kishimoto Yoshihisa, who later headed the development of Double Dragon. So, if the car in the garage at the beginning of that game looks familiar... well, now you know why.
The gameplay is about what you'd expect from an 80s FMV game. If you quickly hit the correct buttons when prompted, the video continues. Take too long or hit the wrong button, and you'll die and be sent back to a checkpoint. Like most games of its type, the key to winning is to repeatedly play each sequence until you've memorized the inputs.
The Sega CD version's video and sound quality isn't ideal and the framerate sucks, but it was all fine enough - impressive, even - for a 1993 Sega CD release. The art and music are excellent, the gameplay is straightforward, and the cartoon is entertaining to watch. I had fun with it.

A playthrough of Sunsofts 1990 license-based action game for the NES, Festers Quest.

On the surface, the NTSC and PAL versions of Festers Quest appear similar, but a couple of key changes made for the PAL release make for a very different experience.
Sunsoft put a fair amount of effort into optimizing the game for the 50Hz PAL standard. In the NES/SNES era, PAL games often had huge black screen borders and ran much slower than their NTSC counterparts, but that was not the case with Festers Quest. The PAL versions image fills the screen (though with some garbage at the top and bottom edges thats not hidden in the overscan area), it runs at the same speed, and the music (including the digitized samples, most of the time) plays at the correct pitch.
But they didnt stop there. The core gameplay was tweaked: Festers gun is now more powerful, and his shots travel through walls and obstacles. These two changes have a huge impact on the games flow and difficulty balance, turning what was once a reasonably challenging game into a walk in the park. With an auto-fire controller, you can casually stroll through most areas without ever taking a hit, and the bosses can be torn through like a wet square of single-ply toilet paper.
Theres also a new snail enemy that turns into a slime puddle, which I thought was a fairly strange thing to include, and you get a couple more seconds of echoing explosion noises when you kill a boss.
If you were someone who found the NTSC version impossibly difficult, youll likely love the PAL version. If you enjoyed the challenge posed by the NTSC version, youll probably dismiss the PAL version as an abomination that completely destroys the integrity of the gameplay.
I love Festers Quest, and while I cant say that this is my preferred way to play it, I think its nice that theres a version that makes it more accessible to those who prefer frictionless gaming.

A playthrough of Squares 1991 role-playing game for the Super Nintendo, Final Fantasy II.

Final Fantasy II was the fourth game in the Final Fantasy series, but it was only the second to see an official English release, coming to North America a little over a year after the release of the first Final Fantasy on the NES (https://youtu.be/A6sdvTUh9II).
When the game was rereleased for the PlayStation a decade later, Square renamed the English version Final Fantasy IV to reflect the games proper place in the series timeline and to differentiate it from the real Final Fantasy II (https://youtu.be/ViL0hbSbfhM), a 1988 Famicom game.
This was the game that turned me into a die-hard JRPG fan. I got it for Christmas, and it had me utterly enthralled. I had played and enjoyed stuff like Dragon Warrior before, but this was beyond compare.
Along with being the first 16-bit Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II was the first in the series to feature characters with firmly dictated roles and personalities. It dropped customizable classes in order to serve up a stronger character-driven narrative, and it succeeded in a big way. The extreme melodrama might seem quaint by modern standards, but the story taking center stage in such a way was a real revelation in the early 90s.
The plot takes several interesting detours, and I remember some of the twists really taking me by surprise when I first played it. The characters do a solid job of (at least attempting) to develop over the course of the game - Cecil was an awesome protagonist - and the story holds together remarkably well given how easily it could have flown off the rails at certain points. It somehow manages all of that while being saddled with one of the roughest translations to be found in an SNES RPG (pre-Breath of Fire II, that is), and it clearly defined the foundation upon which the rest of the classic series was built. I loved these characters by the time the game was over. Hell, I even have Kain incorporated into the mass of tattoos that run down my right leg.
The gameplay systems saw a fair jolt in the upgrade to the SNES, as well. The ATB (active time battle) system premiered here, marking the first time in the series that stats, casting times, and the amount of time you take to decide on a course of action all have an impact on the turn order in a fight.
And finally, the presentation set the bar for console JRPGs for quite some time following its release. The detailed enemies, mode-7 map, full-frame battle backdrops, and the quality of the spell effects were a huge leap from the 8-bit games, and the soundtrack is still among the best orchestral scores ever pumped out by the SNES. The quality of the compositions and the instrument samples garnered Uematsu and Squares sound programmers a great deal of praise, and its difficult to overstate just how much of the games tone and emotional impact relies on its music. If push came to shove, Id have to say its my all-time favorite video game soundtrack. (I had so many cassette tapes filled with tunes that Id recorded while playing!)
Final Fantasy II was a landmark game, and even though https://youtu.be/wpKEFXrkGzc surpassed it in many ways, I always find myself coming back to this one. Its my favorite JRPG, and I think its one of the best games in the series.
