In this episode, I talk with author and leadership expert Sally Helgesen about her latest book: Rising Together: How We Can Bridge Divides and Create a More Inclusive Workplace.
We discuss the different triggers that women, people of color, and members of other historically marginalized groups may face in the workplace, such as being interrupted or having their ideas ignored, and how to deal with them effectively.
Helgesen emphasizes the importance of rewriting the script in our minds and reframing situations to find a path to action - even if we're sort of "making up" a reality that may not be entirely accurate. She suggests questioning our own stories and considering other explanations for the behavior of colleagues.
In one chapter that both inspired and (full disclosure) triggered me a bit, Helgesen talks about how to build relationships with perceived adversaries to enlist them as allies. She also stresses the need for acceptance and awareness of triggers, along with taking deliberate action to move forward.
