After talking with a friend about narrow gauge steam locomotion, I decided to pay homage to the K-27 Mudhen's cousin: the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad's K-28. These are slightly modified and larger versions of the K-27 2-8-2 Mikado and most oftentimes fitted with a Westinghouse in front of the smokebox. Furthermore, the teardrop balancers on the outside frames are significantly different with the main driving wheel having the full tear while the remaining drivers not directly attached to the drive shaft have much smaller balancers. Naturally, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is featured prominently here since they are the only railway in the U.S. to have any preserved members of the class. There is, however, footage of these K-28s in action for the Rio Grande before preservation. Hope you enjoy!
