Here is a compilation of the great 2-8-4 Berkshire locomotives of the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Built by Baldwin, Lima and Alco, these engines were superb for heavy-hauling freights and express passenger trains. As is well known, Pere Marquette 1225 was utilized as the physical basis for the Polar Express. Featured here are the Nickel Plate Road, primarily, and Pere Marquette locomotives, including NKP 765.
