To mark 100 years since the world's most famous locomotive rolled out of Doncaster Works on 24 February 1923, here is a look at the continuing life of LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman. In this compilation, I tried to give a general breadth of the engine's career on the rails from her beginnings to present day. Unfortunately I do not believe there is any footage of when Scotsman first starter her tenure as a simple A1 when she was numbered 1472, but thanks to the namesake film in 1929 we do have some of the earliest footage of here when she was renumbered as 4472. Then we get a glimpse at her A3 days when she was modified around WWII, experimented with a double chimney and German-based "elephant ear" smoke deflectors during the BR days, and then her life in preservation with Alan Pegler and others. Naturally, footage had to be included of her trips abroad to the United States (including her shipment from Liverpool and then her smuggling across San Francisco Bay to return home to Britain) and to Australia. Also featured is James May with his enthusiasm shared by many for this wonderful locomotive. Hope you enjoy!
