WE COULDN'T BELIEVE THE NUMBERS OF BIKE RIDERS IN TIMES SQUARE!
I met up with streets advocate Mark Gorton today to contrast what Times Square looks like now (deserted with a few pedestrians and cars) with what it did like a little over a year ago (with literally thousands of pedestrians per block, some having to walk in the street and everywhere uncomfortable!)
The before & afters are stunning. We expected to see some bicyclists on the much lighter car traffic 7th Avenue - but were really blown away by the number of bikes (delivery people, exercisers, people running errands, and maybe even a morsel of tourists).
Listen as Mark describes how we need to take advantage of this sad era yet unique time to re-calibrate our streets for people. More public space, more & better bike lanes and much wider sidewalks - just to start.
