The South Australian RIDER SAFE ASSESSMENT DAY - CAN YOU FALL OFF YOUR BIKE AND STILL PASS?
Here's what the second and hopefully finally day entails ...
Day 2 builds on day 1. You will learn to use third gear along the straights, brake before a corner, take the corner in second gear, then get up to speed and third gear, before repeating the breaking and cornering in second gear. Then there will be more weaving practice using the cats’ eyes again.
Next you will practise giving way to other riders and swapping lanes with other riders, using indicators and head checks. The idea is that you will need to either slow down or speed up to swap lanes without hitting the other rider. Common sense plays a big part here.
After this, one person at a time goes into the middle of the riding range alone and is required to do 4 full lock U-turns in a space marked out by cones. Other riders will continue with weaving techniques around the range.
The final task is for all students to do a figure 8 at the same time, giving way and speeding up as necessary at the cross over point.
The Final Assessment is done individually and is quite simple. It does not involve weaving, U-turns or giving way.
Set off without stalling and get up to third gear. Slow down with both brakes, go into second gear, turn left at the top of the oval, looking through the corner. Accelerate back up to third gear, slow down to second gear to go round the bottom of the oval shape and then back towards the top of the oval. Accelerate, changing up into third gear, slow down, changing to second gear and then first as you stop between two cones. You get one metre leeway for your front wheel before and after the cones for stopping. Stop, placing your left foot down, clutch in to avoid stalling.
