In his opera comedy INTERMEZZO, Richard Strauss doesn't focus on myth and antiquity, but instead takes up a real life story. Like in a biopic, a marital quarrel unfolds here with many of the things a relationship drama needs: jealousy and misunderstandings, prejudice and contempt, everyday escapism, loneliness and too little time together.
Director Tobias Kratzer seizes the opportunity, saddles Richard Strauss' excellent composition with its symphonic, dazzling interludes and flies through the narrative in a gallop full of punchlines and quotations.
