On Feb. 24, 2026 the Wayne State University Board of Governors unanimously voted to appoint Richard A. Bierschbach, 14th president of Wayne State University.
President Bierschbach has led the university on an interim basis since Sept. 17, 2025. Prior to that appointment, he served for over eight years as the dean of the Wayne State Law School. In that role, he led Wayne Law through a period of increased national recognition, academic distinction and institutional stability and worked closely with the faculty and staff to launch pathbreaking new programs that propelled enrollment growth and positioned the law school for the future.
In his service to our university, President Bierschbach has proven to be a strong, trusted and collaborative leader. He lives and advocates for our shared mission every day. President Bierschbach understands Detroit, our region, and Michigan; actively engages in campus life; strengthens partnerships; and has proven ready to tackle challenges and opportunities in a head-on, collaborative manner. His understanding of and connection to our university are deep and authentic and he is a champion of Wayne State’s unique and essential role in the sphere of higher education.
