When you fracture, break or injure a rib, you'll create compensations in the surrounding muscles and tissue which can restrict rib mobility and inhibit breathing. They can also reduce lung capacity. It's fairly easy to release this tension with basic myofascial release along with your breath, though. This video shows you how you can fix your own rib pain with a little MFR.
