DRY-BALL? YOU DECIDE…
After weeks of eager anticipation James Kalm, and several hundred paint-heads, showed up at Cooper Union’s Great Hall last night to partake in “Rewriting Painting” a panel discussion moderated by Barry Schwabsky, along with fellow art critics Faye Hirsch, John Yau, and painters Lois Dodd, Thomas Nozkowski and Philip Taaffe.
Your correspondent was titillated by the questions (to quote from the press release): “How far have artists extended the boundaries of the medium in the 21st century, and what does it mean to be identified as a painter today? Is the word ‘painting’ still adequate to describe a practice which no longer necessarily involves paint or flat surfaces? And to what extent do the ways in which we write about painting influence both the public’s reception of the work and contemporary practice itself?”
Although your reporter respects the heck out of all the panel members, the hour and some odd long discussion, ended up being a back patting, book selling promotional event (sponsored by Lund Humphries Contemporary Painters) That’s fine, everyone’s got to make their nut. Unfortunately, there’s no faster way to shut down edgy, challenging ideas and brusque critiques of mass culture and art, than to let commerce rule discourse.
Few of the prime questions thrown out as bate to attract attendees were broached. The only risky tweak of the evening was Philip Taaffe’s mentioning the 75th anniversary of Albert Hoffman’s first LSD trip in Basil in 1943.
Maybe this reporter is deluded but, I long for a forum where these kinds of questions could honestly be debated in public. Perhaps this could only be accomplished in an environment exclusive of the Academy and the Market?
