Team Valero and their families recently planted 750 trees at Valero’s Montreal-East terminal site in Canada. This project was carried out in collaboration with the (Société de verdissement du Montréal métropolitain) Soverdi, an organization that develops greening strategies in urban environments. Valero worked with Soverdi to assess and level the land, test soil quality, and identify the appropriate plants and trees.
After the prep work was completed, employees began planting white firs, silver maple, Ohio buckeyes, serviceberries, European larches, Colorado spruces, Japanese lilacs, and American elms. Some of these trees, at full maturity, will grow up to 82 feet (25 meters). Now, more than 20 species of trees and bushes suited to urban conditions make up this micro forest, which is unique to an industrial site of that size.
Valero has a large industrial footprint in the east of Montreal and hopes this project inspires others in the area to participate in similar efforts, creating more green spaces with a variety of plant species.
