Continuing my series looking at the first 5 Squeeze albums, we get to the mighty fourth. Released in May 1981, 'East Side Story' saw them handing the co-production reins to Elvis Costello and moving away from their straight-forward, upbeat pop sound to take in such musical styles as psych, country, soul, rockabilly, orchestral rock and chamber music. Lyrically the record explored such themes as marital infidelity and the perils of drunken housewifery, while stirring in a dizzying assortment of characters - from the air-headed bargirl of 'Vanity Fair' to the lonely divorcee of 'Labelled With Love'. With Paul Carrack replacing Jools Holland and taking lead vocals on the immortal 'Tempted', this was Squeeze as fans had never quite heard them before. Join me as I tell the story of this unique and significant album, delving once again into the messy and turbulent history of this oft overlooked British band.
