Welcome back, wrestling fans! Today, we are diving deep into Season 7, Episode 8 of Vice TV’s incredible documentary series with my full review of "Dark Side of the Ring: The Walking Riot" focusing on the one and only, Missy Hyatt.
First off, a massive shoutout and credit to Vice and the entire Dark Side of the Ring production team. They consistently do an absolutely stellar job pulling back the curtain on professional wrestling's history, letting us know about the gritty, untold stories we either never heard of or only heard locker-room rumors about. This episode is no exception!
In this review, I’m giving my raw, unfiltered opinions on Missy's groundbreaking career. We all know her for her trademark Gucci purse and how she revolutionized the role of women in the wrestling business, but this documentary really digs into the heavy stuff—the scandals, the emotional turmoil, and her real-life battles with addiction. I discuss her early days breaking into World Class Championship Wrestling, her time around the Von Erich family, and the wild reality of the territory days.
I also share my take on some of the behind-the-scenes disparities she faced as a non-wrestling female character. From the doomed "Missy’s Manor" in the WWF to becoming one of the biggest television stars in WCW with "Missy Does The Mail," the episode lays it all out. We also get into her time in ECW and the severe unequal treatment, sexual harassment, and backstage politics she had to navigate throughout her career. There were definitely a few shocking details brought to light here that completely blew my mind!
