Thank You, Peter Cullen: The Voice That Raised an Entire Generation of 80s Kids
This week has brought unimaginable heartbreak to those of us who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s.
In the span of just a few days, we have lost the absolute pillars of our childhoods. Dolly Parton, whose incredible music played in every house growing up and who voiced herself in that unforgettable episode of Alvin and the Chipmunks, passed away at the age of 80.
Then, we lost the brilliant Tim Curry at age 80, the chilling voice of Hexxus in FernGully and the very first and only voice of King Maximilian/Nigel Acorn in Sonic the Hedgehog Saturday AM. It feels like this month cannot end soon enough.
Now, we must say goodbye to Peter Cullen, who passed away peacefully at 85 in Los Angeles, surrounded by his loving family. In their beautiful statement acknowledging his passing, his family reminded us to carry his legacy forward and "be strong enough to be gentle"—words that perfectly capture the soul he poured into his most iconic role.
For an entire generation, Peter Cullen wasn't just an actor; he was the definitive voice of our childhood. From his commanding narration in the intro of Voltron: Defender of the Universe to being the original voice of Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, his vocal presence was everywhere.
Disney constantly called upon him, lending his talents to the original DuckTales, Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Darkwing Duck, and TaleSpin. Whether he was working on these animated classics or bringing his talents to modern shows like Amazon Prime's Invincible, his voice was unmistakable.
Yet, no matter what character he played, every time that deep, resonant voice came through the speakers, you couldn't help but think about Optimus Prime.
He defined heroism for us. He brought Optimus Prime to life in the 1984 animated series and stayed with the character through the live-action films right up to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Born on July 25, 1979, I am literally a child of the 80s, and his passing hits harder than anyone could expect. From 1984 up to 1990, there was not a single day I didn't wake up specifically to watch Transformers on KTVU Channel 2 in the Bay Area.
It was my absolute go-to show, and Optimus Prime was a daily fixture in my life.
To Peter Cullen: As a fan who spent his childhood listening to your voice, thank you. Thank you for the memories, the comfort, and the incredible legacy you leave behind. You truly raised an entire generation of 80s kids, and we will never forget you. Till all are one.
