A widely-accepted visual language of medieval fantasy character design has developed over the past 20 years of video games—even the most casual nerd among us could immediately identify a ranger as a ranger or a mage as a mage, for example. So what are these visual cues that have come to carry so much symbolism, and where does that meaning come from?
