What is the difference between armor for war, and armor for tournament? Armor for foot combat, and armor for mounted combat? In my view we draw a few too many hard distinctions between "categories" of armor when design is not always driven by a tactical imperative. What do we lose by viewing the past purely through a functionalist lens?
