Review of the Columbia River Knife and Tool Woods Chogan hawk and the mods Ive done to make it my own. The head is 1055 ( iirc) forged steel and weighs 2lbs, the handle is 19". Out of the box its ready to go but needed a few simple mods to finish it up and make it a little more durable. This hawk replaces the Cold Steel pipe hawk that I lost last fall when I was doing trail maintenance. The Cold Steel was a nice hawk for around $20, but isnt as "refined" as the CRKT. Both needed some file work done to stop the head from mushrooming the top of the handle, as well as a proper edge put on and the gloss finish removed from their handles. The head of the Cold Steel is held on by an additional set screw that the CRKT lacks, and in my opinion, is not necessary. Once I refinished the handle , fixed the head and gave it an edge the CRKT definitely looks and cuts much better than how it came. So far I'm happy with how it turned out and will be using it quite a bit on the trail and around the house. Let me know if you have any questions on either this, or the Cold Steel.
