Are "smart bulbs" a smart idea? These WiFi enabled light bulbs can be used independently, without a large system purchase. You can control them with a free phone app, or use a smart speaker such as Google or Alexa. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that they are "backwards compatible" and gracefully fall back to "standard light bulb" behavior with an attached wall switch. I am not normally one who would be interested in smart devices due to (1) privacy concerns and (2) not wanting to over-engineer a light bulb. However, in spite of those concerns, I found this to be a fun experience.
