The Joint Research Centre (JRC) calculated that there is a potential to reuse 6 billion cubic meters of water for irrigation, and so save water for use in industry and in our homes. This properly treated wastewater could meet up to 10% of irrigation demand.
At the JRC, our research helped set limits for water quality laid down in the 2020 Water Reuse Regulation to ensure treated wastewater is safe for re-use, and mean farmers can use grey water from our homes to grow their crops. JRCβs guidelines and ongoing advice help treatment plants operators and farmers to assess and manage risks to human health and the environment and ensure water reuse is safe for irrigation.
The JRC, together with industry and policymakers, is unlocking the full potential of water reuse to ensure a more secure water supply for everyone.
