On 8 October, ASPI was pleased to host a panel discussion exploring the concept of an “unconventional deterrent” for Australia.

Led by Senior ASPI Fellow Lieutenant General (retired) John Frewen, speakers included David Kilcullen, Professor of International and Political Studies at UNSW Canberra; Brigadier (Ret’d) Professor Ian Langford, Executive Director of the Security and Defence PLuS Alliance at UNSW; Dr Andrew Maher, senior lecturer at UNSW Canberra and Courtney Stewart, Deputy Director of Defence Strategy at ASPI.

The discussion examined the barriers and opportunities for Australia to pursue an unconventional deterrence approach. It also drew on findings from an upcoming ASPI report, examining how irregular warfare, deterrence and resistance can be harnessed to complicate an adversary’s calculus and shore up credibility where Australia faces conventional shortfalls.
