California’s largest agricultural water recycling project is set to breathe new life into the landscapes of southern Sacramento County by swapping groundwater pumping for a drought-proof supply.
The Harvest Water initiative will deliver a massive 50,000 acre-feet of recycled water annually to more than 16,000 acres of working lands, creating a reliable infrastructure that supports both the economy and the environment.
This intentional shift in water management, detailed by Sonny Lunde of the Sacramento Area Sewer District, aims to raise local water tables significantly while stabilizing the region's most critical natural habitats.
"By providing the farmers this water for irrigation use, they no longer have to pump groundwater, thus restoring our groundwater up to level 35ft over a period of 15 years... it provides benefits for wildlife habitat and will help sustain 5000 acres of riparian and wetlands habitat."
By integrating agricultural needs with ecosystem restoration, Sacramento is demonstrating how recycled water can be a primary catalyst for long-term regional resilience.
