This can be reliable on smp, sadly youll have to test it on your server to see how it works there. Ping can also play a role. If this does NOT work for you in singleplayer, there was probably a major lag spike or just not enough fps. And check your wiring ;) Sorry for any inconveniences, but I cant really test it on every computer out there :P
