Tim provides an overview of the history and use of research performance metrics in Australia from the 1990s until now. He discusses recent research showing how metrics can impact the progress of science, as well as some strategies for how to employ useful metrics to advance your research career.
Dr Tim Cahill has 15 years' experience working with stakeholders in Australia's R&D sectors to maximise the benefits of publicly funded research. He has held executive roles in the public, private, non-profit and higher education sectors, including as: Director of R&D Advisory Practice for KPMG Australia; Director of Australia's national university research evaluation framework, Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA); Chief Data Scientist at The Conversation Media Group; and Managing Director and founder of Research Strategies Australia.
