Search and rescue efforts intensified Friday in Gyirong County, China's Xizang Autonomous Region, as teams reached the hardest hit area by Wednesday mudslide.

Five people were killed and 558 remained missing as of 3 p.m. Friday, according to the regional emergency management department.

Rescue personnel said debris piled up about 3 km upstream of the port can only be safely cleared once the risk posed by the blockage is resolved.
