Today I'm doing something a little different: I'm rereading Colleen McCullough's epic family saga The Thorn Birds and am pairing it with a full 1980s-style book report and scrapbooking session.
If you grew up in the 80s, you remember the assignment: a handwritten book report on lined paper, maybe with a flimsy plastic cover and a hand-drawn illustration and title page. I'll walk through my reread of this sweeping multigenerational story of the Cleary family. We've got forbidden love, the Australian outback, Father Ralph de Bricassart, Meggie, and all the heartbreak, and a proper old-school book report, scrapbook-style to go with it.
I'll share what stood out to me reading this 1977 bestseller as an adult and how the experience of scrapbooking while I read The Thorn Birds helped me slow down and really sit with the story.
