Twenty-five years after first reading Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, I returned to the book that a (highly influential) friend once recommended to me. I reflect on what it means to revisit a book after such a long time, how our views about a book can change over time, how we change, and how re-reading can become a way of making peace with the book, with memory, and with one’s own past.
