REPORTERS ROUNDTABLE: We sit down with Pat Bradley who is the North Country Bureau Chief for WAMC Northeast Public Radio to talk about the new $268-billion-dollar budget that was finally approved by the New York State Legislature this week, nearly two months after it was due.
It includes a boost in education spending, a 2% increase in Foundation Aid. Also, the final budget also includes a controversial immigrant protection package that limits cooperation between ICE and state and local agencies.
There are changes to the state's climate law that passed in 2019, including a 5-year delay of the state's zero-emissions school bus mandate that would have required school districts to convert their entire fleet of buses to electric by 2035. The state will also spend a billion dollars to send rebate checks of up to 200 dollars to taxpayers to reimburse them for high utility bills this past winter.
Pat also discusses why nurses at CVPH set up a picket line outside the hospital in Plattsburgh, and why New York governor Kathy Hochul is now supporting the idea of New York State bidding on hosting a joint Winter Olympics that would be held in both New York City and Lake Placid.
