“Being bipolar is this deep, dark secret. I’ve been kind of in semi-retirement the last 14 years, going out into outer space every once in awhile with my mind. I regret that I have a mental illness. When I’m sick, my old friends they go, ‘Well, she’s being weird. It stigmatizes me and I don’t like that because your friends let you down.
I feel like if I’d had a hip replacement, I would have at least gotten a ‘get well’ card. When you’ve been diagnosed and spent two weeks locked up, forced on medication by a psychiatrist that won’t even talk to ya, it takes a little while just to get back to normal where you feel like pluckin’ your eyebrows again.
It’s more healing for me to talk about it openly than being forced on medication. I’m not any ordinary plant lady. I am South Austin’s ‘Happy Plant Lady.’ Overall, I’m still here in Austin, Texas.”
