"Every time someone meets us as a family, I can sense they’re trying to piece together how we had June. I always wanted to have my partner carry my genetic child. I felt really narcissistic that this is how I wanted to have a child because it’s a very privileged way to have a child.
Hailey was trying to get to me to commit to starting to have kids, asking me, ‘Why won’t you move forward?’ I just broke down and I was like, ‘How can we even do this? Financially, emotionally, logistically?’ And then also, ‘I want to do it this insane way.’
Hailey’s kind of a super woman so whatever I say I want to do - you know - it’s kind of like that ‘careful what you ask for.’ This baby is made of my design genetically, but it’s built of her blood, of her energy, so it’s literally this union of the two of us, and that’s what hit me really hard when she was born.
We’re so proud of June. I love the fact that we had her this totally unconventional way. Sometimes it’s harder. Sometimes it’s in a way a struggle, but I know that in 20 years, I’ll look back and say, ‘We did it - I did it exactly how I wanted to do it.” -- Simone J., #LivesofWomen
