This video presents eight allemandes by Robert Johnson (1583 - 1633), the scores to which Sarge Gerbode has collected from several manuscripts, edited, and typeset in an easily readable edition. Strangely, one of these eight pieces is entitled "Allemande 12," which leads me to believe that Robert Johnson composed at least eleven other pieces for this type of dance. I do not know whether they were originally included in a manuscript that did not survive or whether some of them were never made public. Since I cannot be sure of the numbers that Robert Johnson assigned to these pieces, I simply number my recordings. The second one is known as "The Prince's Allemande," of which five differently ornamented versions exist, only one of which I have recorded. For the sixth one, there is both the piece itself and an ornamented version of its first section, which I append at the end, giving the whole an ABA structure.
