Remote ID Will FAA Eliminate FRIAs?
In this video I will discuss the future or FAA Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs) and their likely future as part of the FAA's new Remote ID program that will start on Sept 16, 2023.
In short, I think that FRIAs are a common sense approach for remote ID and the recreational pilot. They do not cost anything, are in uncontrolled airspace and help with the enjoyment of the RC hobby. I think FRIAs will be around for a long time.
After Sept 16, 2023 all model aircraft (fixed wing, drones and helicopters) that weigh over 250 grams will need to be registered and comply with Remote ID. Remote ID will transmit a signal that shows the drone's location and take off point along with other data. The only areas where an RC model will not require Remote ID are FRIAs, usually at an AMA club or educational institution.
FRIAs must be approved by the FAA and will last four years. The huge benefit of a FRIA is that the RC model does not require any remote ID hardware at all to legally fly on a recreational basis. Thus, I discuss that FAA FRIAs will be part of the remote ID system for many years to come.
