They speak his name now
like it was always sweet on their tongues,
like they didn’t once choke on it,
didn’t call him communist,
didn’t drag him through newspapers
and courtrooms and night sweats.
They say Dr. King now
with statues polished
and postcards pressed,
as though granite ever hid a bullet,
as though hymns ever stopped a rifle’s breath.
But we remember the man,
not the monument.
