On the 16th of August 1819 the area around what's now St Peters Square, Manchester, played host to an outrage against over 60,000 peaceful pro-democracy and anti-poverty protesters; an event which became known as The Peterloo Massacre
An estimated 18 people, including Women and children died from sabre cuts and trampling by cavalry on horses. Over 700 men, women and children received extremely serious injuries. All in the name of liberty and freedom from poverty.
*This horrific Outrage occurred during a period of immense political tension and mass protests. Fewer than 2% of the population had the vote, and hunger was rife...
*This Massacre was effectively Manchester's Tiananmen Square - Yet subsequent Manchester Councils (of all political colours) have shamefully ignored this slaughter of Mancunian people. Even a plaque they did eventually erect made no mention of the killings - and vague promises of a proper memorial are yet to materialise after nearly 200 years...
*Very few local schools mention this event in their history classes. The brave people who died at Peterloo have effectively been Air-Brushed from history.
We Demand a proper and fitting Memorial to the brave Men, Women and children who died protesting for Freedom, Liberty and Representation! WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!
16th of August 2011 saw WeAreChange Manchester activists marking this sad day in Manchester's history with a mass leafleting session on the site of the Massacre.

2012 turned out to be an apocalyptic (i.e. revealing) year after all though not in the ways expected!
Digging for Richard IIIs bones in Leicester began during the jamboree of Londons Olympic summer and was almost immediately followed by the revelations of the Hillsborough Report and then those about Jimmy Saville the man who fooled so many people in all sections of British society for over 40 years. And then up popped the bones of THAT particular King! A deeply symbolic event. His death occurred at a critical turning point in British history, which brought in the Tudors and laid the basis for world empire.
500 years on, we are now facing another such turning point.
Do we reject the emerging European Superstate only to merge with the existing American Superstate? And what about the even larger Transatlantic Superstate (USA and EU): the first stage of which was quietly announced just days after the sudden news of the Popes resignation? Is it our role simply to be a bridge between these two behemoths?
So many aspects of British institutional life, including the UK itself, are tottering. How to make sense of all this?
Terrys presentation seeks to throw a keen light on whats going on and suggest ways forward that the media are ignoring.
