In Boy Scouts, "Tenderfoot" is the first rank, meaning a rookie or a novice. I fell in love with the way the word sounded - the imagery is sharp in my head. People ask me why this song is titled so, and for me, it's this. In a lot of ways, we are beginners at truly loving ourselves. So many things about ourselves, we hate. We give ourselves a hard time, even when we're doing our best. I'm always rediscovering how to be kinder to myself. It's easy to forget, so I'm always starting over. But that's okay.
I've been playing Tenderfoot for 2 years now, and I wrote this song because I needed to hear it. Such a personal song, coming from a hard place. It's a reminder to listen to our needs because WE are important. To love ourselves, even when it's most difficult.
I also wrote this song for my listeners who have shared personal stories and struggles with me. A lot of them fight through each day, carrying unkind thoughts about themselves. It hurts me to think that we could be so cruel to ourselves sometimes. And I get that, too. Every now and then, a dark cloud of thought reigns over me, and sometimes I let it win. But each day, I can only try to do better. And I hope to do myself better every day.
Huge thanks to my patrons over at Secret Song Society for writing the lyrics that I've projected on the screen. I took their handwriting and created individual artworks for each slide. Getting the timing down to perfection was a challenge! The OHP projector is a thing of my childhood I haven't revisited in a long while.
