My final project for ENTM 105. Hope you all enjoy and learn something new! The spotted lanternfly is everywhere and I wanted to raise awareness.
Lyrics:
Exterminate - Walnut Tree ft. Native Bugg
Exterminators
Exterminate every acre of this property, we’re damn good too
But you can’t be any geek off the street
Gotta be familiar with the movements of invasive species
Exterminators! Round up…
[Verse 1: Life Cycle and Introduction]
It was a clear blue sky, a clear hot June
Walnut tree was by the street, trying to consume
Some sun through the leaves, when I felt something flown
Crawling up my side, gnawing like a bone
It started one day, 2014
I was sitting way up high in the walnut tree
Seen a brown & red bug with a spotted wing
Laying 1000 eggs up in his leaves
When they first emerged, late May into June-ish
They looked just like a tick, just a native nuisance,
Then molt two more times, within a month
But only on the fourth can you tell what’s up
Instar one, two, and three, eating beech and birch
They like the fleshy green parts before they’re mature
But when summer’s at its peak they turn red and switch
You’ll see them all up in the trees eating limbs and sticks
My bark is cracked, I’m breaking myself
I can’t believe they’re taking walnut’s health
They pierced the tree and ate my phloem
July to September felt like no end
About 100 plants known where they’re chowing down
Ain’t none of them feeding without leaving sap on the ground
They wanna eat up my grapes until the leaves are brown
I best pick up my boot and start to pound and pound
They’ve got sacs full of eggs, I think I’m going down
I thank the stars it’s not a problem year-round
But they’ve got wings and they fly, and they all migrate
It starts with a tree, now they’re moving state-to-state
Sixteen different states are calling it home
Native bugs aren’t enough to get it under control
Just listen to this and we’ll escape the fate
Native Bugg and Walnut Tree gon’ exterminate
[Verse 2: Response Methods]
The spotted lanternfly is the name of this foe
Now we’re gonna teach you some steps of control
Very first step, you’re gonna observe
If the lanternfly laid eggs on your car or your curb
There’s 40-so eggs in every known mass,
They’re laid upon hard surfaces so keep track
Hand sanitizer, they’re gone
Bag up that E-G-G, and pour it to be free
Most of the bugs have a favorite spot, a tree that’s a pest as well
Compound leaves and a seed pod are the ways that you can tell
Tree of Heaven is pesky as hell, on it’s own, it might be fine
But when the bugs touch down on the green green leaves, they’re gon stay alive
I got a list of the tools that’ll kill it real well
The next stop is the backyard to kill
[Verse 3: Prevalence in the United States]
They’re creeping, their numbers getting higher
Cleveland down to North Carolina
So, if you see them flying
Then go fill out the form to the APHIS
Vines, leaves, they eats everything
Tree bugs: for giving them life, a life they’re taking.
Now you know what I know, you gon put a stop to this
It’s the tree bug era, New York into Maryland
Out in Pennsylvania, you might see them every day
And up in Northern Virginia, you know we exterminate Exterminate - Parody of Regulate by Warren G and Nate Dogg - Spotted Lanternfly Awareness](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/hcrpr0_XGUg/mqdefault.jpg)
