TRAGICALLY LOST during the Great Fire of London in 1666, the building known now as Old St Paul’s Cathedral was one of the most incredible and famous medieval churches in the world. In this architectural history documentary from History Calling I take you back in time and show what Old St Paul’s looked like, inside and out during the more than 300 years that it stood in England’s capital. I’ll tell you about its history, from the time it was founded, explaining why it took so long to build, some famous events that occurred in it (including the marriage of Prince Arthur Tudor and Catherine of Aragon), what happened to its spire during the reign of Elizabeth I and also who was buried in Old St Paul’s. I’ll also share the heartbreaking story of how this magnificent piece of church history was destroyed in 1666 when fire raged through the capital during the reign of Charles II and show you some of the few items saved from the ruins of this famous lost building of London and now kept in the ‘new’ St Paul’s Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and built in the late 17th century on the same spot as its predecessor.
