Arrow Video brings Red Planet (2000) to 4K Ultra HD with a fantastic new Dolby Vision transfer and DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio.
Starring the late Val Kilmer, Terence Stamp, and Tom Sizemore, this new release gives the film its best presentation yet.
Packaged in a standard Amaray case with a slipcover, the release includes an illustrated collector’s booklet and reversible artwork featuring both the original poster and newly commissioned art.
The 4K Dolby Vision grading brings out vivid colours, from the cool spaceship interiors to the burnt-red surface of Mars, while fine detail looks better than ever. The DTS-HD 5.1 audio track offers a solid surround experience, even if Atmos isn’t included.
Extras are somewhat limited, but we do get a new retrospective, new visual essays, and select archival material that dig into the film’s production.
Red Planet follows a mission to Mars that quickly spirals out of control, with the crew facing environmental extremes, equipment failure, and an unexpected biological threat on the planet’s surface. Although overlooked on release, the film is a tense and ambitious sci-fi survival story that’s ageing better than many remember.
This is a strong 4K release and well worth a look for sci-fi fans and collectors.
