Nature is essential national infrastructure, just like transport, energy and communication networks.
Yet continued unsustainable use threatens the natural systems that underpin our economy, our health, and our national security. Conversely, securing the future of natural systems brings financial certainty and resilience to the systems that support our country.
To realise the power of nature in driving growth, we need to increase the recovery of nature so it can continue to support us into a more secure and equitable future. People, business and government must see nature as a vital investment in the nation’s future.
Our new strategy explains the role Natural England will play in recovering nature at scale and unlocking sustainable growth, housing delivery and long-term public sector savings.
The strategy is framed through four strategy outcomes for nature.
1. Recovering nature
2. Build better places
3. Improve people’s health and wellbeing
4. Deliver security and resilience through nature
For outcome 1, recovering nature, success looks like:
🌲Natural systems like rivers, forests, wetlands and seas are restored with action focused on reversing the root causes of their decline
🐦 Wildlife is thriving in protected areas, which are connected to and enriching the wider environment
🏞️Ecosystems are stronger and healthier, supporting abundant and diverse species.
