This is a little research project of mine.
Each melon thing is a few thousand voxels. There's probably about 4 million of them in the scene (ignoring the recursive bit).
The rendering algorithm runs on the x86 CPU (no floating point or GPU) and runs at about 17-18 frames per second at 320x240 on my middle-of-the-road Toshiba Satellite L500.
