TALK TITLE: Relighting Portraits Using Machine Learning

TALK ABSTRACT: Until very recently, when you captured a portrait photograph, the lighting of the original scene was “baked” into the image. However, recent advances in computer graphics techniques leveraging machine learning have enabled photographers to change the lighting in a portrait after its capture. In this talk, I will introduce the general problem of computational portrait relighting, and I will then introduce two recent machine learning based approaches that tackle this problem. The first approach forms the basis for a recent computational photography feature developed by Google, called “Portrait Light,” which allows users to add a synthetic fill flash into a portrait image. This feature launched for the Google Pixel Phone and in Google Photos in October 2020. The second approach tackles more generalized relighting - allowing you to relight a portrait and realistically composite its subject into an entirely new scene. These recent advancements mean that photographers and cinematographers will be able to spend less time setting up lighting, as changing the scene’s lighting can now be accomplished in post-production -- well after principal photography.
