The catastrophic shifting has buckled structural elements and caused the first section of the pier to tilt precariously downward into the surf. Key Impacts of the Structural Failure * Chit Chat Cafe Demolition: The beloved, decades-old eatery sitting at the base of the pier was immediately evacuated. Because the building is actively pulling apart and leaning from the foundational shifts, the city has approved its complete demolition as it is too unsafe to salvage. * Perilous Future & Rebuilding Costs: The 1,140-foot pier is heavily exposed to aggressive South Pacific long-period swells.
