A Critical Dragon | Reading Against the Grain: One of the reasons some books "don't work" for us. @ACriticalDragon | Uploaded July 2022 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
Our expectations about how a text should function, can often lead us astray when we are reading a text that never had any intention of conforming to those rules or those expectations.
We can often try to impose a narrative structure onto a text that has been written with a completely different structure in mind. Unsurprisingly, this can lead to significant feelings of frustration on the part of the reader.
Often the best strategy is to accept the conceit of the narrative and judge it on what it is trying to accomplish, not on the basis of what we think it should be accomplishing.
