After breaking the last cage in the Canopy, leave the room and come back. The portal to leave the level will be active.
Here's my guess as to why this works. The cage is only visible if you're pretty close to it. I think they did this so you can't break it before gaining access to the room. The Teensy in the cage has the same property; he's only visible if you're close. If you break the cage and leave the room, the Teensy will disappear. When you come back, the Teensy doesn't reload properly. The game activates the portal because it would be impossible to leave otherwise. It's similar to the trick in Top of the World where dying causes the portal to appear.
