The TIA chip (Television Interface) is the heart of the Atari 2600, responsible for generating video and audio output signals.
Ignoring the video aspect (pun intended) in this post, it can generate pulse waves and white noise to two channels. The frequency divider is only capable of detuned and odd tuned frequency, making it tuned to inverted harmonic. Still reading? Well, I don't care much for the technicalities either, so don't ask, I won't be able to explain it properly! =)
This does however, result in a chip that is not musical unless you stay within the frequency limits or modulate between two detuned
frequencies to create vibrato. Like making music by hitting wires with a stick. These limitations makes it very primitive and brutal. It's also what makes it sound so very lovely, old-school *Atari*.
As a hobby musician that spells chaos in my mind. Making (let alone coding) music like that is way above my capability! Enter TIA tracker by Kylearan (Andre Wichmann) - a PC based tracker for making Atari VCS music. The limitations are still there but now I can use my ears to work around them.
Conclusion: The frequencies of the TIA chip are weird. Back in the day it was mostly used for sfx anyway and in that regard it works like a charm. Making music with its limited frequencies and only two channels is a challenge and I applaud the Wizards who have done it. Here is a "doodle" I made with TIA Tracker, still trying to figure things out but having fun along the way.
